Halloween Creatures (2.0) Book Tag

I was tagged by Kelsey at There's Something About KM to do The Halloween Creatures 2.0 Book Tag, which  was created by Anthony at Keep Reading Forward (who also created the original version). I've marked any horror books with a star in case you're looking for recommendations!

Halloween Creatures (2.0) Book Tag

Witch

A Magical Character or Book
Witchstruck by Victoria Lamb
Meg Lytton is probably one of my favourite fictional witches. I actually read this story out of order (I started with book two) but I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a historical, Tudor Witch fix.

Werewolf

The Perfect Book to Read at Night
The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud *
OK so maybe not perfect to read at night? I think the Lockwood & Co books are actually terrifying. I love the ghostly alternate world.

Frankenstein

A Book that Truly Shocked You
I know it's a Red Eye book, but I was still not expecting it when I went in. I loved how twisty it was, how chilling it was. Just don't read this book when it's snowing.

The Devil

A Dark, Evil Character
I swear, I can feel their sharp little fingers digging in to my skin. C R E E P Y. And most definitely evil.

Grim Reaper

A Character that Should Never Have Died
Riley from Undead Girl Gang by Lily Anderson
Yes, without Riley's death the story would never have happened (this isn't a spoiler, it's there on the blurb AND the first chapter of the book) but her and Mila just meant so much to each other.

Zombie

A Book that Made You “Hungry” for More
Gosh, I love this series. I love Rory, and I love how much this book (and series) makes me feel things.

Gargoyle

A Character that You Would Protect at All Cost
Rayne from Possessing Rayne by Kate Cann *
Rayne, oh Rayne. She's one of my favourite fictional characters ever, and I would definitely protect her at all costs.

Vampire

A Book that Sucked the Life Out of You
The Queens of Innis Lear by Tessa Gratton
This was a DNF for me, it was somehow too wordy. Definitely a not-you-it's-me thing and I think this would be a good read for people who like super long fantasy.

Ghost

A Book that Still Haunts You
Lucas by Kevin Brooks
This. Book. I remember first reading it around 15 years ago and quickly falling in love with Cait and Lucas. The writing and the story are truly haunting, and I have read it countless times since.

Demon

A Book that Really Scared You
Darkemere by Helen Maslin *
Although this is a horror and has ghosts, it wasn't so much the ghosts themselves that scared me as it was the exploration of privilege and power. Darkmere is an excellent book and one of my all time favourites, I'd recommend it to everyone. Think Skins, but in a haunted house.

Skeleton

A Character You Have a Bone to Pick With
Leonor from Ascension by Victor Dixen
I love Leonor, but I sometimes want to give her a shake! Her self-consciousness about her scar really makes me sad, because she's so amazing.

Mummy

A Book You Would Preserve Throughout Time
I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith
This is my all time favourite book, a true modern classic that I think everyone should read. There is a bit of a fairytale quality to the story, and I love it.

Creepy Doll

A Cover too Scary to Look At
Say Her Name by Juno Dawson *
Yeah so this cover is terrifying. Nuff said I think.

  1. Those dolls. I cannot think about them. Too creepy. This is a great tag

  2. Glad you did the tag! :) I also DNF'd The Queens of Innis Lear - it was way too slow-going for me.

  3. I managed to pick up The Name of the Star at a book swap and hadn't heard much about it but I hope that I'll like it as much as you did!
