Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and is a chance for everyone to get to know fellow bloggers and share lists. I love lists. Every week is a different list.
This week is Top Ten
Books That Take Place In Another Country
I read a lot of UKYA so most of the books I read are set in the UK unless they're fantasy. So honestly? This was far harder than I thought it'd be. And oh, would you look at that. They're mostly historical and fantasy. Whoopsy.
- Below Zero by Dan Smith - Antarctic
- Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton - Cuba
- Fir by Sharon Gosling - Sweden
- The Prophecy by Lily Blake - France
- The Call by Peadar Ó Guilín - Ireland
- One Italian Summer by Keris Stainton - Italy
- The Venetian Contract by Marina Fiorato - Italy
- Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor - Czech Republic
- Almost Grace by Rosie Rowell - South Africa
- The Glass Demon by Helen Grant - Germany
And I think a special mention has to go to Terry Pratchett's Discworld, because I think it's more real that the world I actually inhabit.
Where have you traveled in the pages of a book?
Oh good question! I mean, plenty of books I've read have been set in America. The one I just finished was set in Ireland. But I do like books set in Europe; The Book Thief which is my favourite book is obviously Germany. The Prisoner of Night and Fog was also Germany in the same time period. Clearly I like WW2, Germany-located books!

Orphan Monster Spy is set in WW2 Germany, so I think you'll enjoy it :)
DeleteLove Daughter of Smoke and Bone, and that does have a great setting. I love books set outside of the U.S. - which is where I live - because it really can be like traveling without going anywhere.

Yes! That's what I love about reading. I hate travelling IRL so I do it through books.
DeleteThe Venetian Contract sounds good! Here is my Top Ten Tuesday
ReplyDeleteIt's really good, I love Marino Fiorato.
DeleteFab list Cora! I think I'll need to give Below Zero a go as I keeo hearing such brilliant things about it I'm intrigued, even though it sounds quite scary for my taste!
ReplyDeleteAmy xx
AMY YOU'LL LOVE IT. I hope. It's so creepy. But Dan Smith is an excellent author.
DeleteI read Daughter of Smoke and Bone but didn't add that to my list, I like your different countries!!

I had Daughter of Smoke and Bone on my list this week too! Honestly I had to cheat and go with books set outside the US, even though I live in the UK, because I couldn't think of enough non-US and non-UK books!

Same! It was so hard to keep US books off my list because US settings are such a huge part of what I read when it's not UKYA.
DeleteI feel like I need to pick up more books set in the Antarctic. :)
ReplyDeleteOoh the Antarctic. I love stories set there, especially if they're chilling (sorry- I know that was bad) or thrillers. France, Ireland and the Czech Republic all sound great too!
ReplyDeleteBahahaha. Well Below Zero is certainly chilling!
DeleteI'm currently reading The Call! At least, if you can say currently reading when you're 20 pages in and haven't picked the book up in over a week, haha. Reading slump, yay! I hope it'll get a real dark feeling to it though - I heard it should so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteAlso loved Daughter of Smoke & Bone; made me want to go to Prague!
Oh hopefully your slump will lift! I think you'll enjoy The Call once you get properly into it, I remember it being darker than I expected.
DeleteOh you read lots of UKYA, maybe you have some great recommendations for me! I'd love to read more :) The only book I've read on your list is Daughter of Smoke and Bone, but I really enjoyed it :) x
ReplyDeleteI had no idea Daughter of Smoke and Bone was set in Czech Republic, or that Fir was set in Sweden - I'm far more interested in checking both of them out now! The only book on your list that I've read is The Call, and I'm surprised I didn't think of it.
ReplyDeleteThey're absolutely worth it, Fir is soooo creepy!
