Book Review: The Knight's Maiden in Disguise by Ella Matthews *AD gifted

I was provided with a free ebook of The Knight's Maiden in Disguise by Ella Matthews ahead of the blog tour.

The Knight's Maiden in Disguise by Ella Matthews could not have been more perfect. It honestly hit everything I love about historical romance and was perhaps my easiest five star read of the year. And I desperately need more.

Before I was even half way through I was on the Mills & Boon website to buy a paperback copy, but it looks like this one is e-book only - so get your e-reader at the ready. It's only £2.99 so a fabulous bargain.

5 Word Review: Honour, secrets, loyalty, family, love.

The Knight's Maiden in Disguise by Ella Matthews was perfection. Actual perfection. It was everything I have ever wanted in a historical romance and it was an absolute joy to read.

If you're looking for secret identities, this book has you covered. If you want danger and suspense, check that off too. Political intrigue? It has plenty. A delicious slow burn? Oh, yes.

Avva has had it tough, and she lives a dangerous life in disguise. I loved her determination and strength, and how hard working she is. She's living life on the edge but still gives so much of herself.

William is the person you want at your back. He is fiercely loyal, has a truly good heart, and is far more accepting that you'd expect. He had my heart all aflutter.

The back and forth between them is excellent, and I loved seeing their relationship mellow and grow. It starts off tense and full of distrust, but blossoms against an ever threatening background of treason and betrayal. It made the romance all the sweeter. It's a slow build, full of tiny moments of care and secret glances.

Something that was truly wonderful about this book was William, when he first meets Avva. He has this instant attraction despite her living in disguise as her twin brother. And you know what? He's like okay, I like this person and there's nothing wrong with that, I'm going to keep staring. It was so refreshing and truly got me right in the heart, the easy acceptance of these feelings he's got for this person he's just met. It was really lovely, and something rarely seen in historical romance that isn't explicitly queer.

You know when you're reading a book and even from the first pages you know you will love it? That was me with The Knight's Maiden in Disguise. From the writing style to the setting, the characters to the plot, it was utterly amazing.

I think that this book would be perfect for fans of fantasy who are looking to give historical romance a go. It hits up a lot of familiar fantasy tropes while resting firmly in the historical romance genre, giving you a villain to truly despise and a couple to fully get behind.

This is the first of the King's Knight's books, and I will absolutely be reading the rest.

Ella Matthews lives and works in beautiful South Wales. When not thinking about handsome heroes she can be found walking along the coast with her husband and their two children (probably still thinking about heroes but at least pretending to be interested in everyone else).
